Week 1 What is Vermicompost by Traci James, aka "Annelid", 2 minute read
Did you know worms can be some of the hardest workers in your garden? Vermicompost is simply compost made by worms. These tiny helpers eat food scraps like fruit peels, veggie trimmings, and even coffee grounds. As the worms digest, they leave behind a dark, crumbly soil-like material called "casting."
Why is this important? Worm castings are packed with nutrients that plants love. They also help soil hold water better, keep it airy, and support healthy roots.
Unlike regular compost, which can take months and requires turning piles, worm composting happens quietly in a bin. No smell, no big mess--just worms doing their job.
Think of vermicompost as nature's way of recycling. Instead of tossing your scraps in the trash, you can let worms turn them into something very valuable for your garden.
