Worms vs. Dogs, Which is the Easier to Care For

Like a lot of people, we also have pets at home--2 dogs and a cat to be exact.  And like most, we do occasionally get to out of town for different trips.  Before we are able to leave on these trips, we always have to make arrangements for someone to care for the home pets.  However, before we leave, we don't have to arrange for someone to come and take care of the worms--and we have a lot of them.  Let me explain.

Our worms can and are usually cared for on a weekly basis.  That's right.  Once a week, we trek out to the shaded worm bin and, after uncovering our worms, we feed and water them.  Their food?--premoistened shredded cardboard, food scraps, or composted horse manure.   Watering is done with our water hose and Boogie Brew water filter (we don't want chlorine from our water to affect the good bacteria that we're trying to cultivate.) And that's it!  The. worms will be fine!  Off we go on our trip.

Our pets?  They are another story.  They are fed twice a day, taken outside for potty breaks and exercise.  The water bowls have to be tended every day.  Then the cat litter box has to be changed.  We love them, but they are quite a bit of work.  Don't get me started with the extra attention one of our dogs has to have if there is a storm.  Lol.

So, if you are considering raising composting worms, (and you should for making your own super healthy soil) don't let the idea of taking care of them scare you.  You absolutely can do it with little to no extra time to your week.

Check back with our next few blogs as we go over more of how to take care of these amazing little creatures.

P.S.  We do sell worms at our farm in Marshall, Texas year round.  We don't have them for sale online in the summer months or winter months because of the risk of shipping them in extreme temperatures.
